ETF Implementation & Exploration
Digital infrastructure and methodology supporting the construction of actively managed ETFs.
We work with advisory firms to define portfolio rules, check the calculations, and set up a computational system in a professionally managed server center. We also provide technical support once the system is running.

The path toward your own ETF
Define
Select the investable asset universe, establish portfolio constraints, and define the intended active-management process.
Verify
Test the portfolio method, review the calculations, and confirm that the same inputs produce the same results under the agreed rules.
Implement
Set up a server-based system to calculate daily holdings, check the results, and deliver holding files and reports to the firm.
Operate
Provide staff training, technical support, and system maintenance as the firm puts its ETF portfolio into daily operation.
The 30-day verification phase is currently available without charge. We expect to begin charging for this phase in 2027.
ETF exploration
Several portfolios to explore
We have several portfolios to explore as possible alternatives to capitalization-weighted market portfolios. The examples use different asset universes and constraints so you can compare how those choices affect holdings and results.
These examples give firms a place to start. Each can be expanded, combined with other assets, or adapted to suit the firm’s investment approach, risk limits, and plans for an ETF.
Different asset universe
Compare portfolios built from different groups of eligible securities and see how the choice of assets affects the holdings.
Different constraints
Compare the effect of position limits, turnover controls, diversification rules, and other portfolio restrictions.
Alternative to capitalization weighting
See how active portfolio rules change the holdings and exposures compared with a traditional market-cap portfolio.
Foundation for greater complexity
Use the examples as starting points for multi-step portfolios, additional asset classes, and firm-specific active strategies.
Why start with these portfolios? The examples use only the selected assets and portfolio constraints, without outside signals. This lets you check the construction method on its own and trace the results back to the inputs and rules.
Portfolio development workflow
From a defined universe to a firm-specific active ETF
Asset universe + constraints
Select the investment universe and define the rules governing portfolio construction.
→
Verify the methodology
Check the calculations, repeat them, and confirm that the portfolio follows the agreed rules.
→
Add exogenous variables
Introduce economic, fundamental, valuation, sentiment, or proprietary inputs.
→
Firm-specific active ETF
Build a portfolio that reflects the firm’s investment approach, objectives, and risk limits.
Stage 1 — Verify the methodology
- Isolate the portfolio construction methodology.
- Use only the selected asset universe and portfolio constraints.
- Confirm that the process is transparent and repeatable.
- Verify that the portfolio behaves as intended before adding other inputs.
Stage 2 — Enhance with exogenous variables
- Add economic, fundamental, valuation, sentiment, or proprietary information.
- Refine portfolio selection and strengthen risk management.
- Tailor the portfolio to the firm’s investment philosophy and objectives.
- Test more complex strategies after checking the underlying method.
Active portfolio philosophy
Invest Like You Live!
Investors often recognize changes in the marketplace before those changes are reflected in a capitalization-weighted portfolio. You may stop shopping at a declining business while your retirement account continues to hold the stock simply because the company remains large enough to stay in the benchmark.
Our approach considers how companies may perform in the future as well as where they stand today. We study how that information can be used alongside portfolio constraints and risk limits. The calculations need to be repeatable, and the results need to be tested so a firm can judge whether the approach fits its investment objectives.

Infrastructure and communication
A computational system created on a server in a server center supports redundant computation, secure advisor communications, off-site backups, and daily operations.
5thN Financial is not an ETF listing agent. We build the computational systems advisors use to construct, verify, and operate portfolios. Our work helps firms prepare portfolio calculations and files for their ETF listing agents and other implementation partners.
